Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, you’ll find the city of Altoona, established by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849. Soon after being established, Altoona became the largest railroad industrial complex, allowing the Pennsylvania Railroad to supply locomotives, railroad cars, and related equipment. It wasn’t until 1850 that Altoona built and completed 12th Street area, housing a machine, woodworking, and blacksmith shop, as well as a locomotive repair shop and foundry. Visiting today, you’ll see the evolution of the shops, now known as the Altoona Machine Shops.
As the Pennsylvania Railroad continues, Horseshoe Curve was created. The curve was built to help trains cross the Allegheny Ridge, a barrier to the westward trade. This curve became known as one of the eight engineering marvels of the world. It’s visited by thousands of people a year, making it a top tourist attraction and a National Historic Landmark!
After viewing the railroad attractions, make your way to the cultural downtown Martinsburg, PA and the commercial center of Altoona. In Martinsburg, there are several quaint places to eat, such as Restored Grounds, a renovated church that has delicious food and coffee. Interested in more of a sit down restaurant?
