Nashville, Tennessee is more than just great music – although there is a lot of great music. Nashville is innovation: a fusion of artistic and entrepreneurial spirit. Make no mistake, behind the country twang is a real city – and a big one, attracting on average 100 new residents a day. They come for that hopping urban center and a rolling country soul you just can’t find anywhere else.
Music City boasts a nationally renowned art scene, as well as some of the hottest chefs in the country serving up a lot more than the city’s legendary Hot Chicken – although, again, there is a lot of great Hot Chicken (we’re looking at you Hattie B’s).
Beyond its big city energy, the Cumberland River flows into rich green farmland. Inside the city, Nashville is a collection of neighborhoods, communities within communities, ranging from SoBro (South of Broadway) with its honky-tonks and wild rhythms to the excellent shopping in Hillsboro Village and the innovation and healthcare buzz centered around Vanderbilt University.
In the Germantown neighborhood, named for the 19th century immigrant who settled there, you’ll find some of Nashville’s best restaurants, like City House. At Rolf & Daughters, look for pastured chicken, fresh brook trout and a rainbow of seasonal produce, it describes itself as Small, Fun, Focused and Seasonal. And that about hits the nail on the head.
For seafood, try Chef John Besh’s gorgeous Marsh House in the center of the Gulch district.
Of course, the city that Outlaw Country built is going to have its share of dive bars – and Dino’s in East Nashville is one of the best. It’s a dive alright, but somehow not gross. The burgers are better than they should be, and so it the beer selection – from Miller High Life to the local favorite Yazoo Brewery.
As you can see, Nashville is more than its great music. And as you will hear, Nashville is great music. Experience music in its highest form at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, or indulge in the down home sounds celebrated at the Country MusicHall of Fame and Museum. For a real musical treat hit Acme’s Feed and Seed. On the first floor of this three-story monument to Nashville is a fast-casual restaurant with a beautiful second story bar with craft cocktails. Up another flight of stairs is “The Hatchery” the largest one level music venue on historic Broadway Street.
While you might spot a movie star in LA, they aren’t likely to strike up a conversation with you at the bar. In a place like Nashville, with its big city energy and country soul, you really never know who you might run into.
